In Victoria
there are 3.3 infant deaths when compared to 1,000 live births. This is the
lowest number of deaths in Australia (ABS, 2010). Imagine living in a country
where more than half of all children will die before the age of one.
In India,
for example, there was a study conducted by Bassani DG, et al. where, over a
one year, period they recorded 10,892 deaths in neonates and 12,260 deaths in
children aged 1 to 59 months. Twenty three thousand deaths in a single year! Not
only that, but 25% of these deaths were caused by pneumonia. Pneumonia is
something which, in Australia, we take for granted as a very treatable health
issue.
Can you
imagine living in a country where there is such a high possibility that your
child would die of pneumonia before they reached the age of five? So many
countries just don’t have the ability to ensure sick children receive the same
care they would in Australia. In Victoria, we can rush our loved ones off to
hospital. In India, they have to watch as their loved ones die of one of the
most curable illnesses. This is our cause is so important, and our product so
relevant. Our incubator could see many third world infant mortality rates
dropping, and many children living past the throws of pneumonia, and other
similar illnesses.
Worldwide, there are 20
million low-birth-weight and premature babies born every year – 4 million of whom
won’t live past their first month of life. But this tragedy is preventable. With
help from you – our supporters – together we can raise awareness of the cause
we’re working for and the solution we can offer. So spread the word! Do you
know anyone who is keen to join the fight? We’d love to hear about it.
